The Reproductive System

Function

Did you know that the only difference between males and females is their reproductive systems?
While the main function of the male reproductive system is to produce sperm the female reproductive system's purpose is to produce eggs, the magic really happens when they are joined. During sexual intercourse million of microscopic sperm are let out through the penis and enter the female's vagina. They pass up the uterus and through the fallopian tubes. Remember, it only takes one sperm to fertilize an egg so these sperm have to be extremely fast. While this is happening an egg has been let out of the ovaries and is also traveling through the fallopian tubes! When an egg and a sperm meet, they travel together to the uterus where they join and make a zygote; the beginning of a baby. After all, without the reproductive system all life on earth would cease to exist!

Organs

Many organs in the female reproductive system are similar to the ones in the male reproductive system. Take the ovaries. Instead of producing sperm and testosterone like the testes do, they make eggs and estrogen. The vagina like the penis is a passageway to the outside of the body. Other organs like the uterus which holds the baby when it's in the womb, and the mammary gland which feeds the baby when its in the womb, are found only in the female reproductive system. The minor organs include of the seminal vesicles (found only in the male reproductive system) which produce semen and the oviducts (found only in the female reproductive system) which are passageways for an egg connecting from the ovaries to the uterus.

Other systems my system interacts with

The reproductive system would not be able to function without the help of other systems. The endocrine system is a big part of the reproductive system. The most important organs in the female reproductive system are the ovaries and in the male's, it’s the testes. Well, the ovaries are actually called the endocrine glands because they make estrogen (a hormone) and eggs and the testes are also known as the endocrine glands because they make testosterone (a hormone) and sperm. Another system with a large impact on the reproductive system is the muscular system. Every oragn in the reproductive system is made u of muscles. From pushing the baby out of the womb to contracting to urine and semen don’t mix, muscles are very important. The last system with a huge impact on the reproductive system is the nervous system. The nervous system controls every organ in the reproductive system. Nerves tell the scrotum to change size and they tell the uterus to grow during a woman’s pregnancy. The reproductive system could not function without the help of all of these other systems.

Health

Many things can go wrong with the female reproductive system dysmenorrhea, menorrhagia, oligomenorrhea and amenorrhea are all examples of menstrual problems. PID, HIV, AIDS and HPV are very serious and deathly sexually transmitted diseases. Ectopic, endometriosis, ovarian tumors, ovaran cysts and polycystic ovary syndrome are diseases of the ovaries and fallopian tubes. Vulvovaginitis and non menstrual vaginal bleeding are infections of the vulva and vagina. Other diseases like toxic shock syndrome can accure when a tampon is left in the vagina too long. To keep your reproductive system healthy see a doctor often and always remember to have safe sex. Many things can also go wrong with the male reproductive system. Inflammation of the penis and hypospadius are both disorders of the penis. Varicocele and testicular injuries are minor problems, but can cause major pain. Testicular cancer, like any other cancer, is caused when cells divide abnormally and can cause tumors. Epididymitis, Hydrocele and Inguinal hernia are disorders of the scrotum, testicles and epididymis. While many of these diseases are rare, some may need surgical correction. See a doctor often, and remember safe sex is key.

Conclusion

The reproductive system is a magnificent system. It is the key to all life on earth because without it no one in this world would be here. The male reproductive system works very hard to produce sperm while the female reproductive system produces eggs. When a sperm fertilizes an egg the begging of a baby forms. The reproductive system is made up of many organs but there are only to major organs. The male testes which produce sperm and the female ovaries which produce eggs. The endocrine system, the muscular system and the nervous system work very hard to keep the reproductive system up and running. It is very important to keep your reproductive system healthy because there are also many diseases that can harm this amazing system.
